Business sucks – sometimes.
I was listening to a podcast this morning and the speaker kept talking about how awesome it was that success was a struggle. Because the struggle, those walls and ceilings you push up against thins out the herd of competition. In other words it’s awesome when business sucks.
Every wall, every hiccup, every bump, every massive struggle is making your pathway to the top easier and easier. Because others fall away. They won’t do the work, they won’t put the “correct” time and effort in to move the needle.
I have had the pleasure of being involved in a lot of different businesses over the years.
Some were mine, some were family and others were clients or part of a business mastermind company that hired me to assist their students.
…is that business really sucks sometimes when you are working your way to the top.
Continually pushing towards your goals, towards that lifestyle you desire to create feels relentless.
As a result, I also know that some people, most people, fall in love with the concept of being a successful business owner. These are the ones that are always “busy” but not making any money.
They complain lots about who’s fault it is. Coupled with not doing all the steps and they have no business focus. (aka clear niche, clear client transformation, clear strategy for marketing and lead generation).
What I also know to be true is that there are steps to make climbing that perceived impossible mountain of success can be made easier with a few steps for those that truly want to be a successful business owner…
…..BUT….
You must FULLY implement them. No half-assing here please. If you only do part of it, you will not get the rewards. It’s like packing your car, gassing it up, road snacks, you know where you are going and never driving….this happens all the time in businesses.
Let’s shift the “business sucks” into momentum and success.
1. What is my bold money goal this month and how many sales do I need to make this happen?
Once you get this number. Write it down somewhere that you see it every single day. State it out loud every single day. EX: “I am going to make $5000 this month through 7 sales of my program”
2. What steps do I need to take to get to those 7 sales this month?
This could be talking to 14 qualified people who are looking for what you are selling. (if your close rate is 50%. Normal close rate when first starting out is 10-15% until you master your marketing)
It could be simply asking “I have 2 spots available for my XX program. Respond back to me if you think this might be something you are interested in”
It could be putting on a webinar, a live training, getting yourself on 2 podcasts a week, etc.
3. What am I going to allow to fall away that no longer serves me in my business?
This could be things such as doing it all yourself, staff, consultants, clients, working evenings and weekends, selling too many things, being fuzzy on your niche, not having a clear marketing strategy, etc.
4. What are three ways I am going to have integrity with my time today?
This relates to a “no excuses I am getting it done” stance. Let me give you an example of my three for the day I had recently.
- Turn off all distractions.
- No movies playing in the background
- Also no music playing that I can sing to…because I rock at air guitar….
- Turn the ringer off on my phone…I have too many people who have one question or want to run something by me….
- Including turning off all notifications on my phone for email, facebook, etc
- Stick to my big 3 things to complete for the day before touching anything else
- Turn off all work related activities and communications at 4pm so that I can focus on healthy eating, my kids and exercise.
5. What do I need to put in place to make myself accountable to complete the tasks which move the needle in my business?
For me this is chunking. I plan out everything in 1 hour blocks. So if I have a 2 – 1 hour blocks to write and put together the automation of my newsletter (pst that is what I am doing right now) then I put that into my calendar, I set the timer on my phone and I hunker down and do it. No excuses, it must be done in 2 hours.
6. Is there additional training or a coach I can hire to assist me with moving myself forward towards my goals?
I fully believe that every single person needs a coach. Especially entrepreneurs because if we are not accountable and no one calls us on it, then we will keep bumping along.
I look for coaches that can assist me with specific things not generic. In fact, I look for coaches where there is a 1:1 component because I know that works better for me.
Furthermore, I only have one coach or one training program on the go at one time…why?… so I am focused and doing ALL the steps to get myself ahead.
So there you go. Business is difficult and even though sometimes business sucks, I am grateful for it.
Of course I am hoping that you are too, because it means that the seat at the top of your niche or industry is not taken. It’s there and ready for those who are will to do the hardest, most difficult thing that you can do so that you can separate yourself from the rest.
Let me know which of these steps resonate with you to get you on track for a thriving business like no other so that for you “business sucks” is not part of your reality.
Talk to you soon!
